Not One Step Backward

The Mar-a-Lago Club

You could stand me up at the gates of Hell
But I won’t back down
— Tom Petty from the song “I Won’t Back Down.”

Our country is standing at the gates of hell.

The question for history is: Where do we go from here?

If we’re to survive as a democracy and a country of laws then there’s only one choice for those of us not residing deep in the MAGA world of corruption and delusion: We won’t back down.

This week FBI agents executed a search warrant at Mar-a-Lago, the Florida home of former president/noted insurrectionist/unindicted criminal Donald Trump, and his Republican comrades couldn’t spew their venom fast enough or strong enough.

Hysterical claims of corruption, calls for investigations, even demands to defund the FBI were unleashed. (Is this the same thing as defunding the police, which has drawn the ire of the same Republicans?)

This was done with two audiences in mind: Trump himself and the GOP’s MAGA base, which stood ready to echo any claim, no matter how ridiculous or how dangerous, spiced with calls for violence as they sat ensconced safely behind their computer keyboards.

I don’t want to dismiss the possibility of violence here. As we saw in the insurrectionist attack on the Capitol, there’s a segment of the Trump/GOP base that’s primed for action. More than any other, it’s this group that has led to the question of how much the legal system should go after Trump, who appears to have committed a laundry list of crimes in life.

Actually, it’s an easy question to answer: You follow the facts and prosecute anyone who broke the law, including the president.

About Rick Elia

Rick Elia wrote for a newspaper for over 20 years, until he stopped doing that. After that he did some (mostly perfectly legal) stuff we don’t want to talk about. He started writing Facebook posts as therapy for the trauma of the 2016 presidential election. One day he came up with the idea of putting his writings into a blog. So he did. Previously, he created two other blogs: The Folks from Patterson Avenue: http://www.pattersonavenue.blogspot.com 3 Dog Productions Video Village: http://www.3dogproductions.blogspot.com
