Thank God For Joe Biden

President Joe Biden (Carolyn Kaster/AP)

Under normal circumstances, this is where I might say to the Democratic politicians who’ve been attacking President Joe Biden, “With all due respect, I don’t agree with your position.”

But these aren’t normal circumstances. Actually, they’re not even close to normal circumstances, so my comments to those folks would probably be closer to this:

“What the hell is the matter with you? Do you want to hand both houses of Congress back to the Republicans? Do you want to ensure our rights will continue to be eroded? No abortions, even in cases of rape or incest or to save the life of the mother? No more same-sex marriage? No use of contraceptives allowed? No more right for two consenting adults to do what they want in the privacy of their own bedroom?

“Do you want to clear the runway so Donald Trump or some extreme alternative like Ron DeSantis has a smooth flight into the White House in two years? That the GOP operation to steal the 2024 presidential election will continue unabated? More voter suppression and voter roll purges? No protection of voting rights? State legislatures able to throw out the will of the people and pick the winner, no matter how the vote tally actually goes?

“Do you like your Social Security? Do you like your Medicare? Do you like the way Medicaid is covering most of the cost for your parents or grandparents to be cared for in a nursing home? Do you support the hysterical banning of books that are perfectly fit for your children to read? How about a history curriculum designed to not teach the true story of race in this country?

“Do you want a future where the very real threat of climate change continues to be ignored. The same with our gun problem? Where science is an inconvenient truth to be discredited for political gain? Where our health care system continues to fail too many people? Where our burgeoning wealth gap continues to swell, leaving more and more citizens struggling with a smaller safety net to catch them?

“Well, do you?”

Yeah, that sounds more like it.

About Rick Elia

Rick Elia wrote for a newspaper for over 20 years, until he stopped doing that. After that he did some (mostly perfectly legal) stuff we don’t want to talk about. He started writing Facebook posts as therapy for the trauma of the 2016 presidential election. One day he came up with the idea of putting his writings into a blog. So he did. Previously, he created two other blogs: The Folks from Patterson Avenue: http://www.pattersonavenue.blogspot.com 3 Dog Productions Video Village: http://www.3dogproductions.blogspot.com
