Florida Governor/wannabe dictator/racist agitator/power-abusing bullying punk Ron DeSantis is heading to Chicago to speak to a police union in that city next week, and it seems to have resulted in his number one goal of owning the libs.
NBC News reports that DeSantis’s visit “has prompted a cascade of condemnations, accusations and infighting” among candidates in a volatile nine-person race for mayor of that city. For instance, one of the front-runners – Paul Vallas – is backed by the same Chicago Fraternal Order of Police that will hear DeSantis speak.
To his credit, Vallas has issued a statement condemning DeSantis as a “right-wing extremist.” No argument here on that point. Not that Vallas’s hands are totally clean here. He’s also been criticized for appearing before the conservative group Awake Illinois last year, leading to him issuing an apology.
It’s not surprising that the candidates would grab onto anything they can to bludgeon an opponent. That’s the way the game is played. Still, I’d prefer a different response. For example:
“Ron DeSantis has every right to visit our city, and he has every right to speak to any group that’s willing to hear him. He obviously doesn’t believe in or stand for the values that this country was built on and are shared by the majority of Americans, but that’s his right. And that’s all I’m going to say about it because he’s not worth the time or energy to do any more than that.”
Sure, I would have been tempted to add that he’s a piece of shit, but I’m sure my advisors would have worked really hard to talk me out of it.
