The do-nothing Republican Party, in its efforts to distract us from its disinterest in actual governing and its pro-rich, anti-poor-and-middle class, anti-environment agenda, often turns to one of its favorite talking points: crime.
The GOP will tell you that it’s the party of law and order. That crime is rising to the point that Americans should be cowering in a corner in their homes and are taking their lives into their own hands when they go out to buy groceries or stop at their favorite porn shop.
They say this is all the fault of the Democrats. They point to crime rates in our county’s largest cities and remind you that most of them are run by Democratic mayors. They want you to believe there’s some kind of correlation there.
Of course, what they won’t tell you is that our cities should have higher crime rates than suburban and rural areas. There are more people living closer together and a higher prevalence of poverty and financial inequality that are often the driving forces behind crime.
After all, you don’t get many people in Beverly Hills stealing cars or folks in the Hamptons knocking off liquor stores on a regular basis.
But let’s play along with the GOP and talk about crime in this country, starting with theirs.
Great post Rick. It’s good seeing the Justice Department working as it should after the tfg years. Meanwhile, President Biden is calling the MAGA Republicans (not all Republicans, no matter what the media and the Republicans say) out for their lies, hypocrisy and embrace of fascism.
