So, what happened at Mar-a-Lago that has his cult so up in arms?
Agents searched a safe there in an investigation into the potential mishandling of classified documents, the Washington Post reported. This was a court-authorized search. That’s how search warrants work. They don’t come in Cracker Jack boxes.
They’re investigating Trump’s taking of boxes of documents to his private golf club after he left office, instead of them being sent to the National Archives. That could be a violation of the Presidential Records Act, which requires the preservation of memos, letters, notes, emails, faxes, and other written communications related to a president’s official duties.
In January, the National Archives and Records Administration received 15 boxes of documents and other items from Mar-a-Largo. At that time, Trump representatives were continuing to search for additional records, the Post said. Trump was resistant to giving over the records for months.
This material included some classified documents, the Post reported. Their classification level ranged from confidential to top-secret to special handling categories.
Trump advisers have said that he mishandled documents for years, largely by ripping them up. They have denied any bad intent in Trump’s taking of the materials to Mar-a-Lago, saying they contained mementos from his presidency.
You can see how unsettling the serving of a perfectly legal search warrant is to Trump’s minions. It makes you wonder what will happen if Trump is ever charged with a crime – and there’s enough legitimate investigations going on to think that’s a distinct possibility.
Let me repeat: The only course of action for a democratic country is to follow the facts and prosecute anyone who broke the law, including the former president. Whatever happens after that we’ll deal with.
We – and by that, I mean all Democrats because we’re the only one of the two major political parties that wants to protect our democracy and rule of law – must support the investigators and officials who are involved in these cases. And we must demand they carry out their duties without fear or favor.
The Republican Party is the anti-democratic party. It’s the party of corruption It’s the party of lies. Give them power and they’ll abuse it from Day One. Back down from their device rhetoric and threats of violence and they’ll keep pushing, just like any schoolyard bully would.
I have two questions when it comes to possible domestic terrorism in our country by the Right. First, who are they going to fight? Will they attack the Capitol again? Statehouses? City halls? Any regular Joe who has a couple of Democratic campaign signs in his yard, like me? (Vote for John Fetterman and Josh Shapiro, Pennsylvanians)
Second, what should the average citizen do about this? Do we stop calling for criminals to be prosecuted? That can’t be allowed to happen. Do we need to have counter demonstrations that could lead to spontaneous violence? Do we need to have a gun with us when we go out and to protect our homes?
The MAGA crowd is a minority in our country. Any power they have comes from corrupt Republican elected officials who have given them permission to be bold and threatening in the cause of Trump.
To minimize them, Democrats must have the power to run our government – including its investigations – with the professionalism and integrity needed to shut them down.
Our biggest contribution is therefore voting. Giving the GOP control of either or both houses of Congress is simply setting the stage for a corrupt 2024 presidential election and all the ire and violence that it will bring down upon our country.
That’s why this year’s midterms are so important. The crazy folks want to run the country. The corrupt Republican Party is looking for a foothold from which to roll our democracy into oblivion.
We can’t give them that chance.
