Same Story, Different Day

The insane number of guns we have in this country and the almost daily mass shootings we experience here will remain on the back burner for as long as the Republican Party has anything to say about it.

It isn’t just the fear of retribution from the powers-that-be in the gun world. It’s also that after filling the party’s base with so much “They’re going to take your guns,” bullshit, Republicans aren’t even close to having the courage or character to actually tell their people the truth.

That means nothing can happen until the Democrats control the White House, the House of Representatives, and enough of the Senate to either override a filibuster or muster enough votes to get rid of that procedure altogether.

To be honest, even then it will be tough because the Democratic Party isn’t without its spineless characters afraid of the gun lobby. Still, the Democrats are the only one of our two major political parties that has any interest at all of doing anything about this ongoing problem.

Let’s take as an example my GOP Congressman Mike Kelly.

Kelly has voted against expanding the use of background checks to close the “gun show loophole,” which allows criminals and terrorists to buy guns from private/unlicensed sellers, such as at gun shows; against giving the FBI more time, if necessary, to conduct background checks on people attempting to purchase guns; and against reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act, which would have closed the “boyfriend loophole” that allows some convicted domestic abusers to purchase weapons.

Kelly also voted to prevent the National Instant Criminal Background Check System from accessing Social Security Administration data about individuals receiving certain federal mental health benefits. The regulation would have kept an estimated 75,000 people with mental disorders from being able to purchase a firearm, according to an analysis by Snopes.com

This isn’t complicated. As with many other political issues in this country, it’s pretty easy to see which party to vote for on either side of the issue.

Again, if you want the federal government to ever address the gun violence problem in this county by imposing common sense gun laws, you can’t vote Republican.

Because as far as the GOP is concerned, any attempt to do so will end up in the same boat as those poor kids and teachers in Texas.

Dead in its tracks.

About Rick Elia

Rick Elia wrote for a newspaper for over 20 years, until he stopped doing that. After that he did some (mostly perfectly legal) stuff we don’t want to talk about. He started writing Facebook posts as therapy for the trauma of the 2016 presidential election. One day he came up with the idea of putting his writings into a blog. So he did. Previously, he created two other blogs: The Folks from Patterson Avenue: http://www.pattersonavenue.blogspot.com 3 Dog Productions Video Village: http://www.3dogproductions.blogspot.com
