If You Can’t Win ‘Em Over, Run ‘Em Over

Why are you so sure that undocumented immigrants, if they ever get the right to vote, won’t vote for Republicans?

Why, if there are 11 million new voters coming over the horizon, doesn’t your party see them as a fertile ground to swell its voter rolls to an unbeatable size?

Why wouldn’t Republicans be chomping at the bit to show these folks that the GOP – not the radical socialist Democrats – is the party that will provide them and their children with a better life, more hope, and greater opportunity?

Why write them off?

Well, for starters, it’s hard to court possible new members for your base after you’ve shown them how deeply you hate them. How much you relish their suffering. How little their very lives mean to you.

The Republican Party – because of its deep-seated hate for minorities and immigrants and its vicious zero-sum approach to politics – has done everything possible to make us hate them too. And to fortify their efforts, they treat them like garbage every chance they get.

They demonize them. They lie about them. They belittle them. They insult them. They take their children away from them and lock them in cages. They move heaven and earth to prevent them from pursuing their legal right to seek asylum.

Among our own Black citizens, they try to make it harder for them to vote. And heaven forbid if some teacher somewhere tries to teach the truth about our less-than-stellar history concerning minorities.

And, they make up a twisted, evil theory that these people are trying to replace the white race in our country, all while inspiring the insane, white nationalist portion of their base to grab their assault-style weapons and take out as many of them as possible. That’s what happened in Buffalo.

Somewhere along the line, Republicans made the decision that it’s good politics to target minorities and immigrants instead of trying to make their lives better. They correctly figured that this would be like laying out a string of chocolate chip cookies that a lot of white, working-class Americans would following right into a party that has zero – no, less than zero – interest in doing anything for them other than trying to con them out of their votes and their money.

The Republican Party has willingly put itself in a position where it can’t do anything about these people other than to try to destroy them. It’s how they elicit cheers from the stupid, racist, Fox News-watching part of its base. They see dividing our country as a winning political strategy.

Watch what they do. And if you do that, you’ll see the GOP has decided that immigrants and minorities are nothing more than the collateral damage of a political war they have no intention of losing.

Too harsh? Then tell Elise.

I’m sure she’ll have an appropriate comeback.

Rick Elia wrote for a newspaper for over 20 years, until he stopped doing that. After that he did some (mostly perfectly legal) stuff we don’t want to talk about. He started writing Facebook posts as therapy for the trauma of the 2016 presidential election. One day he came up with the idea of putting his writings into a blog. So he did.
