Republicans Are Betting Against America

“It’s never ever, ever, been a good bet to bet against America — and it still isn’t.” – President Joe Biden

President Joe Biden said the above quote during a speech to Congress last year. It’s the kind of thing presidents say when they want to bring our country together, lift it up to accomplish great things, or steel it in the face of grave threats.

And for a long time, it’s been a pretty safe bet that our country will overcome any obstacle thrown at it. That American will, ingenuity, and might will win out in the end. That “American exceptionalism” will lead us to come out on top no matter what.

Is it still a safe bet? If I had to wager, I’d say it is, albeit the glaring unexceptionalism we see all around us, including an oftentimes dysfunctional Congress, a disheartening ignorance of science, a deflating adherence to fantasy and conspiracy theories over the truth, and a disgusting level of hate and racism evident in too many of our citizens.

Do we still believe in the vision of America that our forefathers first outlined, that historians have espoused, that countless politicians have parroted? Are we still all we’re cracked up to be? Do we want to bet on it? Most of us would, but I know some people who aren’t.

The Republican Party is betting against America. The GOP is wagering that all that stuff about what makes us so great is just a bunch of bullshit.

About Rick Elia

Rick Elia wrote for a newspaper for over 20 years, until he stopped doing that. After that he did some (mostly perfectly legal) stuff we don’t want to talk about. He started writing Facebook posts as therapy for the trauma of the 2016 presidential election. One day he came up with the idea of putting his writings into a blog. So he did. Previously, he created two other blogs: The Folks from Patterson Avenue: http://www.pattersonavenue.blogspot.com 3 Dog Productions Video Village: http://www.3dogproductions.blogspot.com
